Dark Horses Publishing is committed to the vision of advocating for the broken, hurting, misunderstood, and forgotten. Through our books we hope to bring a voice to those who don't have one and support those who are reaching out to these precious people.

Now the official publisher of the loved Treasure of the Secret Places Series that has been supporting and advocating for orphans since 2011. We are excited to be launching Rachel L. Peterson's newest book series: The Life of Laramie McCreedy!

Yet six years later, will those faded memories of love make any difference as she holds the choice of life or death in her sixteen-year-old hands. Faced with an unplanned pregnancy, Jenny must decide whether or not to have the abortion everyone says she should.

Alone with her choice, will Jenny follow her fear or face it?

Giving back:

Rachel's heart has always been to give back to those she's speaking out for. Through the Treasures of the Secret Places Series Rachel and Pages for the Dark Horses have been able to donate over $835 to helping orphans and adoptive families!

Desiring to continue in this passion of giving back, at this time all profit from the sale of her new book will be given to helping a Christian pregnancy center, Birthline of Loveland.

Nola

I recently released the second book in my series As We Forgive Our Debtors. In this story we meet a new friend, whose name is Nola.

Nola is a precious girl whose life shines with joy despite her physical challenges that came from brain damage suffered as a toddler. Nola can’t walk and she can barely speak, but she teaches Margie and the Coopers that loving Jesus is something you can do without words.

But where did Nola come from? I read a blog post about a young man at my church who had shared about how he’d spent the entire kids’ night with a little boy who had severe Downs Syndrome. The young man confessed he had previously had reservations about such conditions but through that experience had seen the Lord’s love. Another woman who brought about Nola was a woman who had suffered a severe stroke and can no longer speak but through written word still expresses the life that is inside of her. And since writing this character I’ve had the privilege of meeting Yapheh, and have realized that Nola doesn’t just represent one child but many.

In my book, Nola is blessed to have a loving family that despite everything still sees her as beautiful.

My heart isn’t to sell adoption but to simply provide information for those who aren’t yet in the adoption circle. A common phrase in the adoption world is SN (Special Needs) kids or “Waiting Kids”. But what does that mean?

Special Needs: Some read that term and immediately think Mental Disabilities. YIKES! I could never do that! Now calm yourself. Special Needs is a very broad term. A child could be missing one finger and otherwise be entirely healthy but they would be “Special Needs”. In China there are many little boys (Boys in China! Can you believe it!) who have cleft lip and palates. Many of which have been partially or completely repaired, and they are considered “Special Needs”. “Waiting Kids” is also another term used to describe “Special Needs” kids. (I know, aren’t all orphans waiting?)

Other times a child may be considered “Special Needs” simply because they are older. So now you know. “Special Needs” covers EVERYTHING! From minor to major needs; one time fixes to ongoing procedures and everything in between.

So to say that all these children are “Special Needs” is accurate but to say that physically perfect orphans are not “Special Needs” is in accurate. Any child that has been neglected, abandon, abused, institutionalized and left to fend for themselves is going to have “Needs”.

Don’t be scared, be informed. If the Lord has called you to adoption He will give you everything you need to do it!

And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

And if the Lord has called you to adopt that child missing a finger, He will give you everything you need to do it!

And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19

And if the Lord has called you to adopt a “Nola”, He will give you everything you need to do it!

You have granted me life and favor, And Your care has preserved my spirit. Job 10:12

   Hi Everyone! This is Rachel and I’m very excited to share with you that the first book in my Treasures of the Secret Places Series. The Greatest of These (formerly known as Birdie) is going to be available in audio form for borrowing through the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS). If you are interested in borrowing this audio book, it will be listed under the title: The Greatest of These.

   For this projects existence I desire to say thank you, to a very special blind girl, who’s lack of sight has opened my eyes to a whole new world of people I would have never met if it weren’t for her treasured life. You don’t know it dear one, but your life has forever changed mine. These audio books are dedicated to you.

The Dark Horses

   Who are the dark horses? Webster’s dictionary defines the term “Dark Horse” as: 1. an unexpected winner in a horse race, thought beforehand to have very little chance. 2. An almost unknown contestant regarded by few as a likely winner.

   I’d never heard this meaning until my sister told me about it after she’d listened to the Switchfoot song “Dark Horses”. I really liked the song yet at the end there was one whispered line that stuck out to me, “…stand up for the dark horses…”
   Recently I stumbled across some verses in 1 Corinthians that encouraged me deeply when I think of the forgotten in this world.

²⁶ For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. ²⁷ But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; ²⁸ and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are,

1 Corinthians 1:26-28

   God has chosen these things. The foolish, weak, base things, despised, and the things which are not. 

He has chosen these. Orphans fall under this category fairly easily, but are we willing to fall under this category? For if we are not willing to be foolish we will be put to shame. If we are not willing to be weak we will be put to shame. If we are not willing to be the base and despised things than God has not chosen us. And if we are not willing to be not then we will be brought to nothing. 

And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 18:3

   We too are the things God has chosen if we are willing to identify ourselves as we truly are. He has chosen to spread His Gospel through us, one life at a time. Are we willing to "...stand up for the dark horses..." by allowing ourselves becoming one? When we are willing to throw away the worlds standards from our life, then we too become an unexpected winner in this race. Orphans don't need a popular flashy hero... they need a Dark Horse.
